Spreading Success of the Karaoke bar with guts
Saturday, September 17, 2011
Our Waistline Correspondent reports: It ought to have been a recipe for commercial disaster. It certainly took guts, if you’ll pardon the phrase, to open a bar for chubbies in one of Bangkok’s main arteries of eye candy, Silom Soi 4. But despite the looks-conscious locale, Bearbie Karaoke Bar has been attracting men of extreme girth in droves since it moved to the soi over four years ago. Not only that, Bearbie is so bullish about the future that it has invested in a re-fit; unlike some other businesses nowadays, these chubbies aren’t tightening their belts. So I went along before last week’s reopening to sniff the fresh paint and investigate Soi 4’s heavyweight success story.

The Strange Case of the Disappearing “Gay Night”
Sunday, August 21, 2011
Our High Society Editor reports: A week or so ago, information was posted in our Bangkok Bars section about a thrilling addition to the weekly social calendar. At the futuristic Bed Supperclub in trendy Sukhumvit Soi 11, Sundays were to be given over to a new “Gay Night”. For those of us who prefer champagne with our lifestyle, it sounded almost too good to be true: an opportunity for gay westerners of discernment to meet the upwardly mobile Thai of their dreams. Sharp-eyed users of this site will have noticed that, soon afterwards, all references to Bed Supperclub were removed from www.dreadedned.com. This was done at the request of the management, but their motivation is far from clear.

Markus finds the right Ambiance for a shot of Starbucks and Swiss economics
Sunday, August 14, 2011
Our Hospitality Correspondent reports: It’s all change at Ambiance, the landmark place to stay in the frisky heart of Pattaya’s Boyztown. After more than twenty years, Jim Lumsden - himself something of a Pattaya landmark – has relinquished the management of Ambiance to 35 year-old Markus Gloor, former Assistant Director of the no less esteemed Tarntawan Place, Bangkok. “Replacing Jim won’t be easy,” admits Markus, “but at least I feel very at home in Boyztown”.

End of an era: Telephone Pub at last hangs up on Alexander Graham Bell
Sunday, July 24, 2011
After 24 years, Bangkok’s busy Telephone Pub is chucking out the trademark telephones that used to perch on its tables like ghosts from the pre-pre-digital era of Alexander Graham Bell. In their place, Skype videophones are this week being installed at strategic locations in the bar areas, restaurant and karaoke lounges of the venue on Silom Soi 4. Telephone Pub’s head honcho, Wayne, tells Dreaded Ned breathlessly: “We’ve moved into the 21st century!”

Life after Sudden Death for Bangkok Nighterie
Thursday, July 07, 2011
Following the abrupt closure of @Richard’s in Silom, the self-styled “pub and restaurant” has been resurrected in the same location under an equally eccentric name, @Diamond. Tucked away in Silom Soi 2/1, this intimate venue has had a fresh lick of paint and is under new management. Ned joined a throng of Thai and western well-wishers at the reopening on Wednesday [6 July], and a very jolly night it proved.

The 15th International AIDS Conference has come and gone in Bangkok, with lots of promises made, lots of grabbing the limelight and political grandstanding, but with so many people in town it certainly made for a busy time in the scene in Bangkok - and that looks like continuing into a promising August!

June is typically the lowest point of the slow season but looking at the full calendar for the month and some fairly full venues around Bangkok some nights you might not have known that! But it is all up from here, and it gets off to a good start in July with an estimated 20,000 people coming to town for the 15th International AIDS Conference - the biggest AIDS conference ever, and the biggest conference ever to come to Bangkok!

It never rains but it pours here - the fun that is, not the real rain! In between the occasional showers there has been so much going on in Silom Soi 4 it is impossible to keep up - parties every week this month and special promotions to keep everybody happy! What's pouring in Pattaya is money: into the Pattaya Gay Festival charity coffers as they continue their fundraising as only the Pattayan's know how!

With the hearts and flowers of Valentine's Day gone back in storage for another year, Bangkok and Pattaya both got into a festival mood with major events by Bangkok Pride (handing over the donations to its charities) and Pattaya Gay Festival (starting their fundraising with a bang). Even the government got in the mood with further fine-tuning of the venue closing time regulations - basically bringing it all full circle with most venues allowed to stay open the same hours they were open last year!

Phuket showed us all how to have fun with Beach Road and the Paradise complex full of music and colour for the Phuket Gay Festival 2004 earlier this month, with Bangkok and Pattaya making do admirably with Chinese New Year. Then just as everyone is gearing up for Valentine's Day the government throws a small bucket of semi-cold water on things with their new closing time regulations - but it was nothing like the huge bucket of freezing water that was the worst case outcome suggested by some in the Interior Ministry!

As Phuket gears up for its 2004 gay pride festival at the end of January Bangkok and Pattaya have already begun planning for their 2004 gay festival events later this year and everyone else is gearing up for Chinese New Year. Meanwhile it is local politics at its best with a proposal for condoms for everyone entering the country (but still not for everyone entering gay saunas) and a (possibly only temporary) reprieve from the threatened 10:00PM closing time for all entertainment venues!
